AI Weekly Insights #5

AI Unbound: Revolutionizing Gaming, Communication, and Personal Tech

Happy Sunday!

“AI Weekly Insights #5” is coming your way! This week: ChatGPT’s new updates, Microsoft’s AI venture in gaming, and Humane’s AI Pin launch.

For the week of 11/05/23-11/11/23 (P.S. Click the story’s title for more information 😊):

  • What’s New: OpenAI has shared dozens of new additions and improvements to ChatGPT and their API for developers.

  • The Features: There were a TON of things announced, most notably -

    • GPT-4 has been improved with a new model called GPT-4 Turbo that is more current (up to April 2023) and is cheaper to use.

    • The Assistants API allows developers to create purpose-built AI for different use cases.

      • This API has the same capabilities as their new “GPT” product which allows regular users to create these same “assistants” with no code!

    • The GPT-4 API is now able to take advantage of the vision, text-to-speech, and image generation capabilities of ChatGPT proper.

    • Generally speaking, both the GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 models are up to 3x cheaper to use for developers.

    • A Copyright Shield where OpenAI will step in to defend and pay legal costs for customers that face copyright infringement.

  • Why It Matters: I have spoken a bit about the “GPTs” product here, but these updates not only make AI more accessible and affordable but also push the boundaries of what AI can do in practical scenarios. The legal support through Copyright Shield is particularly noteworthy, addressing the growing concern about AI and copyright issues.

The Assistants Playground

  • What's New: Microsoft has announced a multi-year partnership with Inworld AI to build AI game dialogue & narrative tools at scale.

  • Multi-platform Toolset: The toolset will be expanded as generative AI makes its way into gaming, but will have -

    • A design copilot that assists game designers by turning prompts into detailed scripts, dialogue trees, quests, and more.

    • An AI character runtime engine to enable things like dynamically generated stories, quests, and dialogue for players to experience.

  • Why It Matters: Anyone who has spent time with me knows that I love video games. While simple AI has been a part of gaming since the very beginning, this venture promises a new era of gaming with rich, AI-driven narratives and interactions.

  • What's New: Humane, a startup founded by former Apple experts, is releasing their first device, the AI Pin.

  • The Basic Details: The Pin itself is a square device that magnetically clips to your clothes or other surfaces. It uses a camera, depth, and motion sensors to understand its surroundings. It’s primarily used as a voice-based device, but there’s a green laser projector that can display information in your hand.

  • Why It Matters: While the technology is somewhat expensive ($699 for the Pin + $24/mo. subscription fee), this brings us closer to having something like Jarvis from the Iron Man movies. The idea of having an AI co-assistant who can see the world and assist with many tasks feels much closer than ever. Check out the presentation below:
