Apple's AI Overhaul, LinkedIn's AI Boost, Text-to-Video Innovations, and Recall Delays
Happy Sunday,
It's time for "AI Weekly Insights #33," ready to deliver the freshest AI news straight to your inbox! This week we’re diving into Apple's WWDC announcements, impressive text-to-video tools, LinkedIn’s AI-powered job search features, and Microsoft’s delayed Recall feature.
Let’s get into the insights!
The Insights
For the Week of 06/09/24 - 06/15/24 (P.S. Click the story’s title for more information 😊):
What’s New: Apple made waves at WWDC 2024 with a slew of AI-powered announcements under their new branding "Apple Intelligence" and a host of new features across their software line.
Top 5 AI Announcements:
New Siri: Siri sports a fresh look with a new icon and glowing indicator. More importantly: it’s smarter, understanding context better than ever. You can type to Siri, and it can perform more complex tasks by integrating voice actions with apps.
ChatGPT Integration: Apple has partnered with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT to Siri and other apps. More complex questions can be asked through Siri, complete with photo and document interactions. It will be available for free to all users without needing an account.
Genmoji and Image Playground: Genmoji lets you create custom emojis, while Image Playground allows for intricate image generation using themes and concepts as tags.
AI Photo Editing: A new “Clean Up” tool in Photos uses AI to remove unwanted objects and people from your pictures seamlessly. Photos are also now auto-organized by topics like time, people, and trips, making it easier to find and enjoy memories.
Math Notes and Smart Script: Math Notes allows users to type or handwrite an expression and have it solved instantly and Smart Script improves the appearance of your writing by using AI to recreate your handwriting.
Why It Matters: Apple’s decision to brand its AI as "Apple Intelligence" is a smart move to set it apart from the competition. Previously perceived as lagging in the AI race, Apple has now surged ahead, becoming the world's most valuable company again (surpassing Microsoft and Nvidia). Most new AI features will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro, M1 devices, and newer though. I think this could push many users to upgrade their devices this year. There’s been some scrutiny around the ChatGPT integration, but Apple has plans to include other models like Gemini in the future, showcasing a commitment to a diverse AI ecosystem. Overall this shift underscores Apple's importance in the tech landscape, ensuring it remains a leader in innovation.
Luma’s Dream Machine and Kling AI: New Text-to-Video Generators Stun Market
What's New: Fierce competition in the AI video generation space, with two standout contenders: Kling AI from Kuaishou and Dream Machine by Luma AI being released this week.
AI Video: Kling AI quickly gained popularity with impressive demo clips (although these early examples are usually cherry-picked). It's capable of generating HD videos up to two minutes long, showcasing a promising level of coherence despite some minor artifacts. On the other hand, Dream Machine allows users to generate five-second clips, with some technical limitations and a queue due to high demand.
Why It Matters: The competition in AI-generated video tools is heating up, with significant impacts on social media, the movie industry, and our ability to trust what we see. Despite some limitations and the need for caution with early AI-generated clips, these tools rapidly advance toward photorealistic videos. Kling AI's China-only release and the still-unavailable Sora highlight the growing international competition in this space. Check out Dream Machine on Luma’s site.

What's New: LinkedIn will be rolling out new AI-powered features for Premium subscribers, features such as helping users find jobs and tailoring resumes.
AI Features: The main features being introduced include searching for jobs using conversational prompts, AI-powered coaches for personalized responses to users, résumé and cover letter writing tools, and a chat to break down information in LinkedIn Learning courses.
Why It Matters: In an era where job searches can be overwhelming, LinkedIn's AI tools aim to streamline the process. These features could help job seekers find positions that better match their skills and experience. However, it could also perpetuate biases in hiring processes. This is not the company’s first foray into AI as they’ve used it in various ways for years and started introducing Gen AI features last year.

What's New: Microsoft has decided to delay the release of its new “Recall” feature, instead opting to test with a smaller set of Insider users before a wider release.
Recall: The feature works by taking snapshots of a user’s computer screen to give Copilot a “photographic memory” of a person's virtual activity. While the idea of screenshots was already controversial, security experts determined flaws that could allow bad actors to access the screenshots if given admin access.
Why It Matters: Privacy matters more than ever, especially in this era of Generative AI. As it seeks to become more useful in our everyday lives, companies must ensure our privacy but we must also continue to prioritize our rights to data privacy. Microsoft mentioned the move was "rooted in commitment to providing a trusted, secure, and robust experience for all customers.” This is especially important after Apple’s debut of Apple Intelligence and its focus on privacy for users.
