AI Weekly Insights #28

GPT Updates, Apple Teasers, and Election Safeguards

Happy Sunday!

Welcome to “AI Weekly Insights #28,” an edition with another spectacular scoop of AI news. Let's dive right into this week’s insightful offerings! This week, we’re spotlighting OpenAI’s upcoming livestream, Apple’s AI tease before WWDC, and a new fund from Microsoft and OpenAI aimed at safeguarding elections.

Let's get into the insights!

The Insights

For the Week of 05/05/24 - 05/11/24 (P.S. Click the story’s title for more information 😊):

  • What’s New: OpenAI has scheduled a livestream for 10 a.m. PT on Monday (May 13), where it plans to unveil the latest updates to ChatGPT and GPT-4.

  • Behind the Scenes: Earlier this week, Reuters reported that OpenAI was eyeing the launch of a search engine to rival Google’s. However, CEO Sam Altman clarified that this event would focus solely on updates to ChatGPT and not on GPT-5 or any new search engine. Altman’s enthusiasm is palpable as he promises an update that "feels like magic" and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

  • Why It Matters: It’s kind of cheeky that OpenAI scheduled this stream just a day before Google’s I/O event, which is also expected to be AI-heavy (stay tuned for next week’s newsletter 😉). Though rumors swirl about phone call integration or a new multimodal model, Monday’s announcement, whatever it entails, could be a significant leap for the company as it continues to innovate in AI.

  • What's New: At its recent iPad event, Apple showcased a few AI-powered features in its device lineup, notably with the new iPad Air and iPad Pro. Though the hardware took center stage, Apple made sure to emphasize AI integrations.

  • “Let Loose” Event: The star of the show was the iPad Pro, equipped with the new M4 chip, which Apple claims is 50% faster than the M2, making it “an outrageously powerful chip for AI.” The company pointed to existing features machine learning features like Live Text, Visual Look Up, and lifting subjects from photos alongside new AI features for applications like Logic Pro.

  • Why It Matters: As Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) approaches, the buzz around the tech giant’s AI strategy grows. We’re expecting significant AI-related announcements, potentially including partnerships with companies like Google or OpenAI. Interestingly, Apple's focus was on AI hardware rather than software at this event. It's rare for them to use the term "AI" directly, often preferring terms like "machine learning" or "neural engine." I expect a Siri upgrade featuring more generative AI capabilities to be announced in June.

  • What's New: Microsoft and OpenAI have introduced a $2 million "Societal Resilience Fund" to tackle the growing menace of AI and deepfakes in elections.

  • $2 Million Fund: This initiative is a response to the misuse of generative AI technologies in creating realistic fake content, or deepfakes. The fund is part of a broader effort, including other tech giants, to establish a unified strategy against election-related deepfakes. Tools like a deepfake detector and involvement in the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) are also key components of this initiative.

  • Why It Matters: This move marks a proactive approach to strengthening defenses against AI-driven threats, particularly crucial as over 2 billion people worldwide prepare to vote in upcoming elections. By focusing on education, especially for older adults and those less familiar with AI, Microsoft and OpenAI aim to equip people with the tools to discern misinformation. This initiative is in line with other AI companies setting limits on their technologies such as Google disallowing its Gemini AI chatbot to answer questions about elections and Meta limiting election-related responses in its chatbot in India.

Your enthusiasm and curiosity drive our exploration through AI's rapidly evolving landscape. I look forward to your insights, questions, and assistance in spreading our discoveries with the AI community.

Until next Sunday, keep exploring and stay engaged!
