AI Weekly Insights #16

AI's Next Wave: Gemini, Robotics, and Visionary Wearables

Happy Sunday!

Welcome to the 16th Edition of AI Weekly Insights fellow curious minds and AI aficionados! Our lineup this week is as diverse as the AI ecosystem itself as we are diving into Google’s game-changing AI, robotic breakthroughs, and futuristic eyewear that might just bring our sci-fi dreams to life.

For the Week of 02/04/24 - 02/10/24 (P.S. Click the story’s title for more information 😊):

  • What’s New: Google has launched Gemini Ultra, phasing out Bard and Duet AI for its new flagship family of AI models.

  • Gemini Ultra 1.0: Gemini Ultra is being offered as part of a $20/month subscription that bundles other Google services (like 2 TB of Drive storage). Gemini Ultra is said to be comparable to GPT-4, so expect similar performance with the advantage of attaching to other Google services as well.

  • Why It Matters: Gemini Ultra could challenge the dominance of ChatGPT by leveraging Google's ecosystem for an enhanced user experience. Its ability to integrate with personal data through Google services might make it the next big thing in AI personal assistants. This will be one to watch in 2024.

  • What's New: 1x has unveiled their NEO androids, robots designed for physical labor, in a compelling new demonstration video.

  • Autonomous Androids: The robots can perform various tasks autonomously, using a single vision-based neural network for navigation and decision-making. Their capabilities include basic tasks like object handling and door opening, but showcasing a significant leap in robotic autonomy.

  • Why It Matters: With both OpenAI’s support and a substantial $100 million in recent funding, 1x's NEO androids represent a pioneering step towards integrating androids into the workforce. This could redefine roles in industries reliant on physical labor, highlighting the potential for technological displacement but also efficiency gains. Check out the video below:

  • What's New: Brilliant Labs has revealed Frame, AI-powered glasses that have garnered investment from Niantic’s (the company behind Pokemon GO) CEO.

  • Frame + Noa: The glasses incorporate AI technologies like GPT-4 and Stable Diffusion for a multifaceted digital interaction experience, capable of tasks like question answering, visual processing, and more. The device plans to ship on April 15th for $350 and preorders are available now on their site.

  • Why It Matters: I suspect we will be seeing a LOT of AI-based tech in 2024 and glasses are kind of a natural fit. This is particularly interesting as this intersects with the VR/AR space which is also making significant strides. I can’t wait to experience an AI hologram assistant with something like this one day.
